The depth of Césaire's work requires endless exploration, as its "shimmering beneath" - to use Mallarmé's expression - is a voluptuous challenge to analysis and intelligence.
This glossary is an extension of volume I with the aim of filling in the gaps. Indeed, deciphering Aimé Césaire's writing, extracting the hidden or enigmatic meaning of words and phrases - real nuggets at the heart of the matrix - requires ongoing work, a "work in progress", revealing new sources or new images through definition or hypothesis. This calls into question previous analyses that need to be corrected or completed, in short, requiring a certain humility in the exercise of interpretation.
This new presentation has extended its scope to the complete work, including the Discourse on Colonialism and the speeches of the poet-tribune under the gilded ceiling of the National Assembly. It reveals a prodigious pool of words, proper names of characters or places, expressions and phrases, all shrouded in secrecy for the uninitiated. Who knows the gongyle or the bubu baveux, or even the ogifa? Or who can relate the adventures of the calenders?
