This Harlem nightclub enjoyed its heyday between 1923 and 1936. All the cream of New York's crop would gather at the Cotton Club to listen and dance to the rhythms of the greatest jazz musicians: Duke Ellington, the official bandleader, Louis Armstrong, Billie Holiday, Josephine Baker, Cab Calloway and Count Basie all played their part at the Cotton Club.
Regulars at the club included George Gershwin, Charlie Chaplin, Fred Astaire, Samuel Goldwyn, May West, and Judy Garland. In strict accordance with the conventions of the time, the club was for a long time reserved for white patrons and off-limits to Black people.
