Naoki URASAWA was born in 1960 in Kyoto. A graduate in economics, he has divided his time, since high school, between drawing and music. In 1982, he received the prize for best young mangaka awarded by the publisher Shôgakukan. His first work "Beta" - a science fiction story? published, he went on to win a string of successful series and accolades: 35th Shôgakukan Prize for "Yawara"! (a sports series about judo) in 1990. An undeniable hit that made its way from manga to the small and big screen. The enormous success of Master Keaton led him straight to the Tezuka Prize in '99, awarded to his new creation: "Monster".
