Those were the days when fighter jets didn't have pointy noses. They didn't carry missiles, they didn't have computers, they didn't use GPS, and they weren't equipped with radar or countermeasures. Everything relied on the pilot's keen eye and his ability to estimate times, speeds, distances, and angles. And to imagine
trajectories: his own, those of his teammates and those of his opponent. It wasn't a science, it was an Art.
It was a time of melees, duels, and great battles. With modern equipment, one could find the spirit of the great "openings of arms" of the Middle Ages and the spirit of chivalry that went with it.
About the author:
General Salini spent his entire career in fighter aviation, from the position of humble crew member to that of commander of the Tours base where the Fighter Academy was then located. He explains to us, in simple and accessible terms, the basics of this art. He also explains the methods used by fighter-bombers and shares his impressions as a pilot aboard aircraft he has flown.
In passing, he pays tribute to the veterans who, during the 1940 campaign, fought in difficult conditions, and gives an original opinion on the Battle of Britain.
Oddly enough, he dedicates his book to the memory of General de Brack, who died two hundred years ago. What is the connection between this Napoleonic general and fighter aviation? It is that de Brack teaches us, through past and future centuries, this essential quality without which nothing is possible: "The Warrior Spirit." "We have good soldiers, capable, if necessary, of dying with dignity, but do they really have the warrior spirit? Does our system encourage the acquisition of this spirit?" These questions occupy part of the book.
