8701 is the third studio album by R&B singer Usher. It was released on in France and the in the United States.
The origin of the album name " 8701 " was unknown for a while. Publicists said they themselves didn't know why Usher chose the name. Fans then assumed the name was derived from the album's US release date,(8/7/01) but Usher insisted it was purely a coincidence. The singer stated that the name referred to something important to him and that he would later announce the true origin of the album's name. His spokespersons later revealed that "87" referred to the year 1987, when Usher performed in public for the first time in the Atlanta church, and that "01" simply referred to the year 2001. The name also refers to the month and year of Usher's birth, taken backwards: thus 8701 is 10/78, or .
