In 1968, ethnologists Richard and Sally Price recorded two evening gatherings in a Saramaka village on the Suriname River. In this book, they recreate these lively evenings full of humor and wisdom, where participants dance, sing and engage in verbal jousts. Even Elephant, reminded of their ancestors' African past, and characters encountered by the Saramaka during their experiences as laborers in French Guiana participate in these stories. 55 songs accompanied by their musical notation allow us to follow the tales and their dramaturgy even better. 35 photos, taken in Saramaka country and in Guiana, allow us to meet the participants of these evenings.
