"Through the DC animated films, the BATMAN COLLECTION box set explores the foundation of the BATMAN myth as well as his relationships with those close to him. THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS, BATMAN: YEAR ONE and THE KILLING JOKE are direct adaptations of comic books , and are considered the pillars of the modernization of the character and his universe.
In 1985, the publisher decided to renew its series. To modernize its catalog, it called on young authors and artists, such as Frank Miller who took charge of the mini-series THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS in 1986. Due to its very dark and adult tone, it was a critical and commercial success and THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS became a reference in the history of the hero. Frank Miller then continued the rewriting of BATMAN by delving deeper into its origins in BATMAN YEAR ONE, a comic that notably inspired Christopher Nolan's BATMAN BEGINS.
In 1988, the high point of this revival came with THE KILLING JOKE by Alan Moore and Brian Bolland, where the theme of madness was addressed as well as the origins of the JOKER. The outcome was dramatic and would have serious repercussions in the rest of the adventures of the masked hero. This decade was also an opportunity to flesh out, or even create new characters, such as Nightwing, Jason Todd as Red Hood, Batgirl or even Damian Wayne as Robin. These were the films BATMAN AND RED HOOD: UNDER THE RED MASK, SON OF BATMAN, BATMAN VS ROBIN or even BATMAN: BAD BLOOD, from the major comic book arcs by Grant MORRISON and also by Greg CAPULLO and Scott SNYDER, which featured these heroes and their relationships with the Dark Knight of Gotham.
