Cannon fodder had golden hands. In the trenches, between two assaults, the soldiers of 1914 remembered that they had been metalworkers, fitters, turners, gunsmiths, mechanics... They found their familiar gestures to transform the waste of war into works of art, shells and cannon casings, rifle and machine gun bullets. They fashioned souvenirs for their loved ones, letter openers, pen holders, watch holders, ashtrays, vases of all shapes.
These humble objects, kept in families, have sunk into oblivion. They have been rediscovered by pious collectors and bear witness, in their ornamentation, to the ideals, dreams, prides and anxieties of simple workers who wanted to leave something of themselves before dying.
